Starbucks barista in Woodbridge asked me what type of manager I was…I responded:

Me:
I am pretty tough to work for.
Barista:
You are mean?
Me:
Nah, I'm not mean, I think I am pretty fun. People like me [insert my signature oversized smile] but I have pretty high expectations. I expect people to be committed to getting better every day. I push people.
Barista:
That doesn't sound bad.

Me:
I also give A LOT of feedback. Good and bad. When you are doing a good job and when you need to do better. I think it is important that each partner knows that I am not going to ever get complacent beca…
Barista:
*interrupting* What is complacent?
Me:
In this case it's like being ok with the way things are when you know you could do better.
Barista:
Okay, that makes sense.
Me:
Yeah, so there's the complacency thing. I'm also a rule follower. I like things to be done to standard. The way they are supposed to be done. Every time. No excuses.
Barista:
Yeah, I can understand that.
Me:
Other than that I like to give credit where credit is due. I say thank you. I communicate the way I feel about people, their performance, their attitude, their clothes, their word choice, their eye contact, the tone of their voice, their body language, *going on and on*…
Barista:
*laughing* Why all that?
Me:
It's all important. If not in this minute, maybe the next. Maybe next year. Maybe at your new job or in your next relationship, who knows. It will matter at some point. I guess I care.
Barista:
Wow, will you be the manager here?
We both laughed.
I said no.
