Some people, (I’m sure nobody you know), say, “It’s Wednesday. That means its hump day. We are half way there!”
For anybody who knows me, I am kind of playful.
I like to say, “Really? Hump Day? Half way there? Where is there?”
The person on the receiving end of my rhetorical question, typically quite puzzled says, “What do you mean?”
I say, “You said; We’re half way there. It’s hump day. I got excited and just wanted to know where we are going and how I can help us get there.”
Now, the person I am interacting with is getting irritated and says, “You know what I’m talking about. We are half way to the weekend!”
Then I know, well actually I know long ago, that this person has a company who has not enabled them to be great.
This is an organization who has not enabled this person to know the difference between being ordinary and exceptional.
This is an organization who has allowed a leader to not develop their associates so that they become enabled, engaged and energized to do the right thing, at the right time, the right way, for the right reason.
If you are a leader, are you focusing on hump day or enablement day?
It doesn’t really matter how you answer my question.
I know that if I want to find out the truth all I have to do is approach one of your direct reports next Wednesday and say, “Hi! How you doin’?”
