Here in Houston, the Art Car Season kick’s off with a packet pick up party (say that 10 times) April 14, 2010 at the Saint Arnold Brewing Company. Registration deadline to enter is Monday, April 12th, but the public’s invited to a free party sponsored by Texas Monthly with music by, Sideshow Tramps. Artists will come pick up their parade packets and mingle with the less design-inclined among us.

Keeping with the art car design theme, Jeff Koons, pop artist, was chosen by BMW to create the latest in a long line of “art cars.” Today, he unveiled his creation at a New York press event.

The car, after an unveiling on June 1st at Paris’s Pompidou Center, will then be driven in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, from June 12 to 13, 2010. For BMW, those moves are designed to highlight the history of the series. The first Art Car by sculptor Alexander Calder raced in Le Mans, in 1975
