Referrals drive more new clients to salons than internet searches do, according to new stats.

Data from 1,000 salons across the UK and Ireland, gathered by software supplier Phorest, showed referrals are more effective than Google when it comes to helping new clients find a salon.

Among the clients of the salons profiled, 370,000 said they found the salon via a Google search, while 507,000 said they were referred by a friend.

The research also showed Facebook is on average twice as effective at getting a salon found as that salon’s own website. The stats showed 92,000 clients said Facebook was the site they first found the salon on, versus 40,000 for the salons’ own websites. ??

Meanwhile, traditional flyers ranked higher than daily deal sites such as Groupon and Living Social as a way to find a salon, suggesting a decline in the amount of people buying services on daily deal sites and the amount of salons and spas using them.
