#936 in the Project comes from the Lancaster Hotel via a post by Ellin Stein in Fodor’s:
Hear a buzzing noise? That would be from the 10 beehives on the roof of London’s Lancaster Hotel, which create the honey given as a free VIP guest amenity.
In 2009, the eco-friendly Lancaster London hotel installed half a million honey bees on the roof. The first of its kind in London, the hotel took the action in response to the sharp decline in honey bees. The hotel’s “Bee Team” headed by Luke Dickson collects just under 100 pounds of honey annually. The stash is served in the hotel’s restaurant and given in little pots as gifts to honeymooners.
Marketing Lagniappe Takeaway: Great job by the Hotel Lancaster to embrace its positioning as an eco-friendly hotel by installing bee-hives. The honey is a nice signature extra that’s guaranteed to be talkable.
Today’s Lagniappe (a little something extra added for good measure) – A little trivia: Honey is the only food that doesn’t spoil.
Here a closer look at the half million residents on top of the Hotel:
