The New Role of Chief Marketing Technology Officer
As the Infographic indicates, some trends are so powerful that they change the industry and the key positions within that industry. Based upon Gartner’s prediction that by 2017 a CMO will in fact spend more time on IT then the actual Chief Technology Officer, a new position is suggested: The Chief Marketing Technology Officer (CMTO). What I agree with is the assertion that the CMTO is more strategic than tactical. They need to:
- Choose and manage marketing service providers
- Branding and corporate communication
- Choose and manage marketing tech providers.
- Managing the technology stack.
- Understanding cross-channel interaction.
- Delivering coordinated, multi-channel messaging.
- Delivering more relevant display advertising.
- Measuring marketing performance.
- Turning social media data into actionable insight.
- Addressing the CEO’s strategic concerns.
- Breaking free from IT-marketing deadlocks.
- Enabling agile marketing
- Dealing with new marketing technology still to come.

How Social Data Elevates CMOs
The Olympics is about coming together, sharing, celebrating the best of the best. So how much did the world share during the London 2012 Olympics? The first item to note is that during the 17 days of the Olympic Games, 306 billion pieces of content will be shared across the Open Web. That is the equivalent to 208,333 shares per second. How did the individual Olympians affect sharing?
- Discernible trends or patterns that may impact the business
- Consumer demographics and/or psychographics
- Consumer sentiment towards individual products or product lines
- Influence of individuals or groups on the purchase decisions
- Consumer sentiment toward brands(s) or company
