Are CMOs Ready For The Digital Marketing Era?

Is social media data actually “the ultimate weapon” for a CMO? Let’s examine the information. Here are the key consumer traits that CMOs believe can be indicated from the collected social media data:

  • Customer collaboration & influence (68%)
  • Growth of channel & device choices (60%)
  • Social media (57%)
  • ROI accountability (47%)
  • Decreasing brand loyalty (43%)
  • Shifting consumer demographics (34%)
We all know that a big factor in successful B2B demand generation is implementation of an effective strategy. Unfortunately, we sometimes have challenges doing exactly that – implementing. Here are the top 5 obstacles:
  1. Too many implementation issues
  2. Cost
  3. Lack of skills
  4. Lack of ROI certainty
  5. Lack of marketing and IT alignment

The New Role of Chief Marketing Technology Officer

As the Infographic indicates, some trends are so powerful that they change the industry and the key positions within that industry. Based upon Gartner’s prediction that by 2017 a CMO will in fact spend more time on IT then the actual Chief Technology Officer, a new position is suggested: The Chief Marketing Technology Officer (CMTO). What I agree with is the assertion that the CMTO is more strategic than tactical. They need to:

  • Choose and manage marketing service providers
  • Branding and corporate communication
  • Choose and manage marketing tech providers.
In addition, Experian listed 10 practical scenarios where a company would need the hybrid position of a CMTO:
  • Managing the technology stack.
  • Understanding cross-channel interaction.
  • Delivering coordinated, multi-channel messaging.
  • Delivering more relevant display advertising.
  • Measuring marketing performance.
  • Turning social media data into actionable insight.
  • Addressing the CEO’s strategic concerns.
  • Breaking free from IT-marketing deadlocks.
  • Enabling agile marketing
  • Dealing with new marketing technology still to come.

How Social Data Elevates CMOs

The Olympics is about coming together, sharing, celebrating the best of the best. So how much did the world share during the London 2012 Olympics? The first item to note is that during the 17 days of the Olympic Games, 306 billion pieces of content will be shared across the Open Web. That is the equivalent to 208,333 shares per second. How did the individual Olympians affect sharing?

  • Discernible trends or patterns that may impact the business
  • Consumer demographics and/or psychographics
  • Consumer sentiment towards individual products or product lines
  • Influence of individuals or groups on the purchase decisions
  • Consumer sentiment toward brands(s) or company
Despite the reports and surveys we read that measurement and the ability to determine social ROI remains a challenge, it appears the CMOs surveyed for this infographic are confident that the social media data collected can have a measureable impact on Brand Awareness, Brand Loyalty and Sales. How do you think we should be measuring the impact of social data?
