Heading tags (H1, H2, H3, etc) are an important contributing factor to search engine optimization because they place emphasis on keywords that are in the headlines of your website pages.
One of the questions that often gets asked is “How many H1 Tags should I have on a page?”
While there are many opinions on this, and no “hard and fast rules”, here is the best post I’ve seen on this topic and it is from the Netbuilders.org website.
“How many H1 Tags per page?
Using H1 for the site name is a complete waste — except on the index page.
There should be one H1 tag and it should be used for the page title. W3C agrees with me.
H2 should be used for paragraph headers, and those should be rich with related keywords.
Sidebars and other site-wide elements should not use HX tags, they should use CSS tags for styling purposes.”
I agree this is the best way to go. Use 1 H1 tag per page as the introduction to the page and use H2 tags for the main paragraphs. H3, etc can be used to structure additional sections of content as required.
