I QuitWhy do people quit their job? More money? No, the majority leave because they don’t have faith in their boss, feel unappreciated and are disengaged in their work!

That’s according to friends of ours, Benchmark Recruitment here in Sheffield. They recently surveyed over 3,000 employees and found that….

  • 22 % left their last job due to lack of faith in the leadership team
  • 19% quit because they felt “unappreciated” and….
  • 19 % left because they felt “disengaged and unmotivated”

As Benchmark Director Louisa Harrison-Walker highlights, it’s not just about the money! In fact, ‘lack of financial rewards’ was the fourth reason at just under 13 %!

Louisa said “Some bosses assume that to keep staff motivated and happy you need to give them a pay rise but the survey shows this is not a priority for most employees. People simply want to feel valued, appreciated and motivated far more than having a bigger pay packet.”

Louisa’s view certainly confirms our research that suggests that 3D businesses ‘Get That Vision Thing’! That means they establish and communicate a vision that ‘stimulates, excites and inspires’ everyone in their business and get them ‘bought in’! (It’s 3D Characteristic #1 in our 7 Characteristics of 3D businesses).

They work hard at ensuring understands this ‘vision’, where they fit in to it, how they can contribute and, crucially, how they are doing! It’s all about ‘engagement’ and making people feel valued.

So, 5 questions for you…….

  1. Do you have ‘that vision thing’?
  2. Are your people ‘stimulated, excited and inspired’ by it?
  3. Do they feel part of it?
  4. Do they contribute to it?
  5. Are they recognised for doing so?Get That Vision Thing Assessment Tool
