We get so hung up on being busy in today’s Information Age. For many, busy-ness in and of itself becomes success.

As we do more and more, faster and faster – we increase the risk of leaving others behind.

Often I find business leaders moving quickly – addressing current issues, making changes to improve their business, gathering new insights from customers, responding to those insights in real-time. Multitasking reaches a frenzy – all in the name of progress. Those close to the leaders know exactly what’s going on.

But how will all the changes, improvements, enhancements, new ideas and more be communicated to your team? Too often we forget the critical importance of that communication.

We create Gravity when we fail to communicate in a timely and clear manner with everyone involved in our business.

As leaders, that doesn’t mean communicating with those close to us and relying on them to communicate to others. It is our responsibility to assure that every employee has a clear understanding of our company’s goals, our plan to achieve those goals, the specific tactics we are executing at this point in time, how their role supports those activities – and any changes we make to that direction.

Here is a question for you. If I were to go after five of your employees in different areas about your business strategy and goals – would they all tell me the same story?

If you answered yes then Good for You!

If you’re not sure, then go ask five employees that you haven’t chatted with lately. If their stories vary – then you know you have an opportunity to clear up your communications.

Busy doesn’t mean productive, nor does it make you a great leader. Slow down, communicate clearly, take the time to dig into the details and bring everybody on board with your focus. When the focus changes, take the time to communicate with those in your business.

You can only reach for sustainable growth when everyone is flying in the same direction. Random busy bees won’t help you soar to escape velocity – but they will get you lost in space:)
