Reno Tahoe USAhas a brand riddled with controversy because those that live or actively frequent the area truly understand what it means to ‘Experience the Adventure’ of the area, yet this community struggles to move the perception dial when it comes to the brand.

Instead of focusing on the why, I’m proposing we start using a tactical social network approach to start discussing ‘it’. We all start to use a twitter hash tag campaign to reach a new audience with true stories. We start to use the #experience adventure which will aggregate experiences, stories, adventures or codes that will serve as a new focus group of sorts all the while using real time social technologies to further the reach. Why do it? You personally could bump your klout score or perhaps, better yet, you could just help be a part of the ‘live stream.’ We need to leverage our differences and similarities to drive brand transformation that will result in new revenue for the region, so why not use this marketing tool to innovate?

Yes, this city in fact is pretty small compared to Las Vegas and it’s certainly no Silicon Valley, but it does have character, charm, great people and a city transportation and fairly minimal traffic (compared to other cities of its size).

I continue to scratch my head when we get all the tourists in town to attend events like Burning Man, Art Town and/or visit the Nevada Museum of Art and yet we don’t seem to capture the entire web buzz that we could. We have culinary programs that we can invest more into like nothing to it that host private events up at the Lake o ranging from Asia to the Midwestern part of the US. We have great talent like Whitney Meyer recently discovered on the Voice and many others whom we could invest more into pass along web traffic. Or perhaps simply invest more into the software firms like Shortstack, Understand, GotDibbs just to name a few software companies whom are doing cutting s. In terms of education, Washoe County School District has received an award for Superintendent Heath Morrison as the AASA 2012 Superintendent of the Year and for Leadership in Communication. Furthermore, we have great sporting events, a new Discovery Museum and UNR which affords summer camps and affordable programs.

Instead of focusing on the why the brand isn’t grounded in reality, I’m proposing that those of us active in social start to use the hash tag with our own storytelling. Through this approach, we will invite new possibilities all the while demonstrating new marketing innovative leadership.

Come on Reno Tahoe Adventurers start to share the code #ExperiencetheAdventure, who knows, it could bring new revenue, mindshare or klout to you or the region. Nothing ventured anything gained, right? Otherwise, we can expect to receive the same ole’ broadcast content into our new channels.
