You can’t manufacture crazy

I read on Techcrunch that Simon Cowell and Will.I.Am are mulling over creating an X-Factor for tech entrepreneurs (of course, the original article came from The Sun, that highly respected font of knowledge in the UK so there’s instant dubiety on the notion) and while some people think innovation has gone mainstream (sorry Alexia) I have a real problem with this.

You can’t manufacture crazy. Innovation and new ideas don’t roll off a conveyor belt. Like in the famous Apple commercial “Here’s to the crazy ones” you won’t find the real sparks lining up in a queue in Manchester waiting to show off their new electric toothbrush invention, or latest Pinterest clone on a powerpoint slide mock-up. While Dragon’s Den tried to give these people a genuine outlet for their creativity and more importantly, advice and funding, what Simon will turn entrepreneurship into is a freak show which will ultimately devalue innovation and turn off those with ideas from seeking counsel and funding because of the ridicule that they’ll perceive will ensue.

Do you really think the next Bill Gates will walk onto the stage ? Do you really think anyone who has a serious idea will hand it over to be managed by Simon Cowell ?

There’s different levels of crazy at play here. Let the crazy go on the game show and leave crazy to the rest of us.

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes.

The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.

About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward.

Maybe they have to be crazy.

How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?

We make tools for these kinds of people.

While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.
