We all want to get ahead. To be considered the best and most valuable resource it requires that you have the largest output. The value you create is a combination of how hard you work, how smart you work and how good you are at executing your job.

I write a lot about working smart and working hard. But the third leg of the tripod is your knowledge and skill.
Reading
I regard reading as the best form of learning the theory behind anything. The immense source of knowledge books are (at a very cheap price) make them a great way to improve.

There are many forms of reading; studying, learning and for fun.
I differentiate between studying and learning since learning is done because you want to, while studying is forced.

Putting yourself ahead of the pack
If you read 50 books about your industry you would probably be the most knowledgeable person in your company. If you put that knowledge to use and used it to hone your skills so that you became the best at executing your job your output would go straight up.

Putting the knowledge to use
Many people don’t put what they read to use. They read it, some sticks and most is forgotten. The things that stick are seldom put to use and the reading has therefore gone to waste.

These 4 steps have helped me put what I have learned to use and has made a incredible difference to my life.

1. Take Notes.
Whenever you read something interesting, noteworthy or something that sparks an idea. Write it down. Save it so that you can go back and use it later.

2. Every time you find something you can use, try it out!

3. Test everything 10 times before passing judgement.
It is important that you don’t try new techniques only once. Usually the first 5-10 times will feel awkward, you won’t be completely relaxed in it and therefore won’t be able to see what the potential results of the technique can be.

The last few times when you are starting to feel comfortable you will see how good the response is. But if you are unlucky the first few times you might strike out anyway, but by trying it 10 times you will have a better pool to judge by.

4. Pass Judgement
Was it worth it to use this new technique?

What you will get out of it
The difference this has made for me is incredible. Most of what you read on this blog comes from this method of learning (I read at least 2 books/months), trying and correcting. I have used it in sales, my personal life and in sports.

It has helped me triple my sales figures, learn recruitment, marketing and leadership.
I have gone from a sub 200 hitter in baseball to a 378 batting average and my personal life is much calmer, but a lot more fun.

I promise try this out (10 times before you pass judgement) and you will start to see the difference in your own life. You will start moving faster towards your success and you will become very successful very fast.
