Want To Improve Your Leadership Effectiveness? Think Strategically!

Working ‘ON’ your business rather than IN it has been shown to be one of the most impactive things leaders can do! According to the Harvard Business Review, a report by Management Research Group (MRG) suggests that a ‘Strategic Approach’ to leadership is, on average ten times more important than other leadership behaviours when it comes to leadership effectiveness.

It was twice as important as communication, which was seen as the second most important characteristic and almost 50 times more important than the ‘day to day’ tactical ahead behaviours!

The evaluation of 60,000 business leaders and managers around the world looked at a wide range of leadership behaviours and characteristics including innovation, persuasion, results focus, communication and people skills.

It reinforces our research which highlights ‘Getting That Vision Thing’ and  ‘Going For Walks’ as fundamental characteristics of 3D leaders - it’s all about thinking and working ‘strategically’ and looking long term – that means working ‘ON’ the business, not ‘IN’ it! Crucially it’s about consciously creating that time to work ‘ON’ the business!

So, what can you do about it?

  • Create An Appointment With Yourself!

Go on, you know it makes sense – get your diary out, create an appointment with yourself and get thinking ‘strategically’! It’s all about creating a long term picture of the future for your business or part of the business.

  • Legitimise It!

Get ‘permission’ from your boss, from your colleagues, from yourself to make it happen! Thinking ‘strategically’ is not skiving – it’s a fundamental aspect of leadership. Let them know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it!

  • Encourage It!

Get others to do it too! Encourage (demand?) that your leaders and your team members create some time to think and work ‘strategically’. Are your ‘strategic’ meetings really that ‘strategic’? Do they focus on the ‘bigger picture’?

And finally, 3 questions for you…….

  1. Do you create suficient time to work strategically and think long term as well as short term?
  2. What do you need to do to make this happen?
  3. When are you going to do it?
