Thank Goodness It’s Today!

Before I get started this morning, I wanted to share a funny email chain I saw as a result of Friday’s blog.

I will not name names to protect the guilty, however I thought this was funny enough that it was worth sharing.

This email chain questioned whether this leader’s team really was excited to come into work on Mondays.

The funny part of the email exchange is that after learning that this leader felt his team was excited and enabled at work, she said one of her good friends has a saying…that saying is, “PKIM” Please Kill Me It’s Monday.

Sometimes taking a look at the opposite of what you want is the best way to understand precisely what your goals are.

I have a different saying…

My saying is, “TGIT,” Thank Goodness It’s Today!

If you think about it, it is silly to think we can predict when a good decision, a good idea, a positive interaction, a personal insight or a mental breakthrough will occur.

One thing I know for sure is that these breakthroughs do not happen between the hours of 9:00 – 5:00 Monday through Friday.

What I also know is that when you create enough white space for your team to be excellent, meaning removing obstacles and enabling your associates, you will be amazed at what they will create between the hours of 5:01 and 8:59.

There is nothing more powerful than a good idea that surfaces at the right time.

Sometimes, actually the majority of the time, these insights, ideas and pearls of wisdom come when you are doing things like:
-cross country skiing
-doing yoga
-lifting weights
-or doing absolutely nothing

The question for you is; How do you create a culture where these ideas are allowed to flourish and people want to contribute when they come to them?

If you are a manager, supervisor, human resource professional or even CEO do you know what you need to be doing?

Let me give you a clue.

One of the most important things you should do is experience your company’s experiences. This means experiencing what it is like at the front line associate level and experiencing what it is like from your external customer’s perspective.

The other key for people to be so fired up that they will be making contributions at all hours of the day and night is removing obstacles that get in the way of creating an exceptional experience.

When you enable your team and recognize and reward their superior performance you will be amazed at how they too will say, “TGIT!”

But, let me caution you.

If you don’t enable your team and you don’t remove obstacles I guarantee you they will say, “PKIM.” If they do, you have nobody to blame but yourself.
