Spotting Customer Problems Creates 3D Opportunities!

Shazia SaleemHere’s a great story of a 3D business – leat Foods has been set up by Shazia Saleem and it celebrates two key parts of her cultural identity – being British and Muslim!

leat Foods produces ‘traditional’ British and Italian ready – meals such as shepherds pie and lasagne prepared in the halal manner according to the Islamic dietary law.

It’s a great example of being Dramatically and Demonstrably Different by focusing on a specific target group of customers and solving a problem!

As a student, Shazia found that when she went out with her flat mates to do the weekly shop, as they packed their baskets with sumptuous foods, she was only able to get vegetarian food because of a lack of prepared halal food.

“Most of my friends at university were non-Muslims, and when we did a weekly food shop together their trolleys were full of really tasty-looking ready meals, and all I could buy were things like cheese and onion pasties,” she explained. “It was really frustrating, and I used to whinge a lot that I was missing out. I thought, why wasn’t anyone making halal ready meals, other than the odd curry?”

Shazia turned this ‘problem’ into an opportunity! Her up and coming business produces products with fully traceable ingredients and her meat comes from a halal only factory – clearly a key ‘ingredient’ (literally!) in her ‘Dramatic Difference.

It’s early days, but it certainly seems to be going well as her products are now being stocked by Sainsbury’s with hope of more to come – everything looks set to go!
