Direct integration offers developers more choices for file comparison

Mason, OH and Isle of Man—February 9, 2009—Seapine Software, a leading provider of quality-centric application lifecycle management (ALM) solutions, and Araxis Ltd, maker of visual file comparison/merging and folder synchronization software, today announced the integration between their software configuration management and file comparison solutions.

The integration between Seapine Software’s Surround SCM and Araxis’ Merge allows software developers to compare multiple versions of a file directly from their source code management tool.

In order to produce high quality and timely software, many development organizations employ parallel development, where more than one programmer works on a file at the same time. Surround SCM—with change automation, custom metadata, and virtual branching—streamlines parallel development.

When it comes time to reconcile the multiple changes, programmers need a way to compare changes. Araxis Merge allows developers to see the differences in file revisions instantly. They can quickly and easily compare and merge different source file versions.

The new integration provides developers a broader choice of how they work. “As one of the leading providers of cross-platform merge tools, Araxis Merge is a nice fit with Surround SCM,” said Richard Riccetti, president and CEO, Seapine Software. “Araxis Merge provides leading edge support for file, directory, and image comparison. Adding Araxis Merge to our list of integrations provides developers more choices. The key is to allow developers to use the tools they prefer. That’s why we continue to expand the number of tools and IDEs Surround SCM integrates with.”

Chris Heinrich, an independent consultant and user of both Surround SCM and Merge, stated that the new integration will improve support for parallel development. “I have groups of developers supporting multiple versions of software. I use Surround SCM’s branches to work in parallel and Araxis Merge to reconcile changes between versions. A tighter integration between the two tools will streamline my process.”

According to Michelle Mendes, Araxis’ head of marketing and business development, “Araxis Merge and Surround SCM are a perfect complement to one another, helping developers take control of their work and be more productive. We are pleased with the integration and welcome Surround SCM as a member of our prestigious group of integration partners.”
