Employee Engagement: Create A Better ‘Offer’ Before They Get One!

Increasing expectations, greater choice and a stronger willingness to move on – sound familiar? Those are the challenges that many businesses say they face when it comes to retaining customers.

Interestingly, it’s not just customers who are saying these things – so are employees! A new report suggests that even though 58% say that they are ‘satisfied’ in their work, less than 40% see themselves still working for their current employer in 12 months time!

OK, the report is from a recruitment consultant, but it is interesting – they say that 63% of employees are more likely to leave their current employer because of a better offer elsewhere rather than a lack of opportunity or general dissatisfaction in their current job.

So, what does this mean for business leaders today?

I’d suggest that it means that ’employee satisfaction’ is simply not enough (sound familiar? ‘customer satisfaction’ isn’t enough – it’s all about ‘Customer Delight’ – now, where have you heard that one?!!)

So, no, I’m not talking about ‘Employee Delight’, it’s ‘Employee Engagement’…. and it doesn’t happen by chance.

It involves…

  • ‘Getting That Vision Thing’ – that means creating a picture of the future that ‘stimulates, excites and inspires’!
  • Establishing an UBER culture – that means spelling out and establishing ‘how we do things around here’!

And finally, it’s about working hard at…

  • ‘Engagement’ – ensuring that people have ‘bought in’ to what the business is about and where it’s going!

3D Businesses spell this out and create something that people want to be part of. They find people who want to be part of it and they ‘champion’ those who live it – they also challenge those that don’t! In fact, they are often quite happy to get rid of those that don’t want to be part of it they are building.

So, rather than wait for your employees to ‘get a better offer’, why not create ‘a better offer’ yourself?
