Are you a Chameleon?

How often do you change to match others?

I call it the Chameleon.

I caught myself doing the Chameleon these past few weeks. Instead of following my own voice – I was patterning some of the folks I most admire. Not necessarily a bad thing – but still a Chameleon move.

We do the Chameleon in business too. We see a business in our space that catches our attention. Could be competitive or complementary. Hmmm, we decide we need to take a closer look. They have some cool stuff, so we mirror them.

We move along and see another opportunity – and shift our colors again. Sometimes the shifts are so subtle – we hardly notice them. Before you know it, we’ve learned to be a Chameleon. We’re shifting to match whoever we’re following at any point in time.

In the process, we forget our true colors.

The problem with being a chameleon is we’re never going to be leaders – or our true selves.

I’m shedding my chameleon skin and coming back into my true colors. Time to defy some natural born human gravity and shift back into my own truth instead of someone else’s knowns.

Any other Chameleons out there? Care to join me?
