User experience online is near about similar to the user experience factor when they visit grocery stores. A pleasant time and minimal hassles is what the user is expecting anywhere. One should be able to navigate the store easily, take what they need, and complete the purchase without problems and get back home.

If one has to deal with a slow cashier, and the stock is not placed systematically and you are greeted by hostile employees, it becomes a terrible user experience just like that. All retail stores understand the same and abide by it too.

User Experience Design — The Rules to Abide

Thinking of user experience design in terms the local grocery store might sound cliché. But the end result is similar. Our site users are humans who are willing to navigate the site without hassles which they came to the site for.

It is easy to pinpoint things that need to be improved. However, the creators themselves will find it difficult to detach from their own designs and user interfaces and would find it difficult to point out the problems from their perspective.

Taking a step back helps in identifying the weak points in the design, so there is no unnecessary frustration and the users get to the content that they were looking for.

Here are some things to look out for making the app future-friendly with a terrific user experience design:

  • Provide a similar experience in all devices

Visitors who come to your site regularly through different devices get turned off if the user experience design is different in diverse devices. The harmony in user experience ensures that no matter the gadget used by the visitor, the experience remains the same.

Visitors who are watching the site on their phone should also find everything that they can get by viewing your site on desktop.

  • Provide instantly recognizable navigation

The key to offering a pleasant user experience is to direct their attention to the content that they want to view. Helping them with a seamless navigation helps them in getting to the content easily.

A user-friendly navigation system is designed to attract visitors to their intended space in the least amount of clicks as possible. They should be able to locate information easily on the site itself.

  • Make the important element on the screen the focal point

Users are going to scan the site page and mostly not going to read everything. If a visitor is keen to find content or get a task completed, it is essential to direct the visitor to the focal point of the page which will in turn get them to what they want.

You can design the page with the focal point on a certain image or topic which will be central to the idea of the page, and then proceed to match elements where the eyes should focus first, second, and the like. Let every screen title and login formor other important content include a focal point that lets visitors see it easily.

  • Ensure all links and buttons function perfectly

If the user does not get what he wants, it is frustrating for him. Users of your app will feel cheated if the buttons or links are not functioning as they should.

Let the user control the entire browsing experience

Nowadays auto-play videos and hijacked scrolling has taken the browsing experience away from users. An app should be functional and controllable by the user including their own browsing and movement throughout the app.

The app is workable only if the user can control it. The other elements need to be used as and when needed only. Diversity and complexity should have the right balance here!

  • Design apps for an ecosystem and not just an app

A vast majority of apps are built with some core features and some solutions to common problems. This does make sense in specific contexts but not many companies think about the app to be part of an ecosystem which allows the app to be extensible with expandable features in the short/mid/long term.

Nurturing collaborative relationships is crucial and one must make sure that the app is compatible with other devices, and ecosystems.

  • Never scale your app down to let them become smaller versions of the desktop application

Many apps are nowadays working like scaled down versions of web cousins. These apps are developed with budgetary constraints but a mobile experience is contextual, and is driven by the core offerings.

  • Allow the real designers to do the job!

While feedback is important of user experience design, almost everyone has an opinion on the intricacies of design. Citations, references, and use cases of some design being used for a similar situation are fine, but one should always trust the judgement of designers since they can be the best judge what will flow well for your app.
